Nutrient recycling by Tropheus brichardi across a littoral productivity gradient in Lake Tanganyika Student:

چکیده
Nutrient recycling occurs when nutrients are released into the environment by animals or microbial consumers. Fishmediated nutrient recycling is an important source of nutrients for primary producers in many aquatic ecosystems, sometimes even exceeding external loading rates (Attayde and Hansson 2001). Consumers release non-assimilated nutrients as liquid waste that is available to primary producers or as feces that is available after further degradation. Most studies on recycling have focused on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) because these elements often limit primary production (Vanni 2002). N and P concentrations in the surface waters of Lake Tanganyika are low, and nutrient supplementation enhances algal growth rates (Thoms this volume).

Indirect and direct effects of fish herbivory on nitrogen cycling in nearshore Lake Tanganyika Student: Brittany Graham Mentor: Peter McInytre
When external loading is small, as it is in Lake Tanganyika, the internal redistribution of nutrients can be important for ecosystem productivity. One conduit for this redistribution is fish. Research has been conducted on the transfer of nutrients into the pelagic or benthic ecosystems by benthic or pelagic fishes, respectively, but less attention has been paid to the recycling of nutrients by...
متن کاملDo gastropod abundances and distributions vary in relation to primary productivity and site complexity? Student: Brittany Huntington Mentor:
Population ecology incorporates a variety of foundational tenets that aid in understanding community structure and biodiversity of organisms in the natural world. For example, it has been observed that increasing the habitat and environmental complexity is correlated with increasing species diversity (Rosenzweig, 1995). Lake Tanganyika, in central East Africa, represents an ideal system to test...

African lakes have produced striking variation in cichlid fish fauna. Lake Tanganyika, whose age is estimated at 9 to 12,000,000 years, is the oldest East African lake and hides morphologically, genetically and behaviorally diverse group cichlid fish. Many of the more than 200 described species is divided into geographically and genetically distinct populations that differ primarily in their co...

The large and productive fishery of Lake Tanganyika is an important source of income and nutrition for the surrounding areas. This fishery, based primarily on pelagic clupeids (Kiswahili: dagaa), is very productive, and provides a readily available, nutritious, and inexpensive source of protein to the rapidly growing human populations in this area. The regional importance of the Lake Tanganyika...
